For my two cents, there´s nothing like real leather. I have a pair of Held bags, made of real thick leather. They do not require much treatment, I only use leather sopa once or twice a year. I keep my bikes in a shed however. I believe it pays to look for really thick leather.
I bought a pair of cheap plastic bags for my Honda. When I opened one of them there was a big red sign in it saying: Keep away from exhaust!
Now this is really somewhat useless.
